How I’ve Gone A Bit Funny

Now THAT'S funny!

Now THAT’S funny!

Today I’d like to share with you how I’ve gone a bit funny.

I promise it doesn’t have anything to do with being left out of the fridge on a hot day. But I can not promise there won’t be cheese involved.

I love cheese.

I also love word-play, irony and surprise. If you’ve been a regular reader of this blog you will know I am a big Steve Martin fan too. You may not know, however, how I also LOVE Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Woody Allen, Eddie Murphy, what I’ve seen of Patrice O’Neal (not enough, RIP), the humour of David Sedaris, the one-liners of Jeff Foxworthy and I’ve got a massive soft brie part for Ricky Gervais*.

(*though Ricky’s more your parmesan of comedy: harder edge than most and good with a variety of foods. Which is not to say Ricky is a big eater. If you’ve seen Ricky’s routine where he criticises Dawn French for picking on HIM over HIS weight you’ll know it’s woe be to anyone who points the fat finger at the new slim-downed King of The Golden Globe’s presentation crew).

So, you get it. I love comedy.

My last book was a comedy, I have had numerous acting roles in the humorous vain (neither word misspelt) and I constantly make my wife laugh by telling her how important it is for me to ‘keep up my blogging’. The thing is there is one thing I have never done within the comedy field, something I have always secretly dreamed of giving a crack but have never had the true self-confidence, self-belief or sufficient self-delusion to try…

Stand-up. Stand-up comedy, to be precise.

But now I am going to go for it.

Now I am putting myself out there for the world to openly laugh at (or not!). Now I have committed to doing my first ever stand-up routine in 2013 (a year I have decided will be called my ‘Year of Comedy’). Now I am sharing my dream of having no shame and poking at any part of me that still might get embarrassed by curious habits I have like checking the birthdays of celebrities in the paper to see how long I’ve got left to catch up to their worldly successes in fields I have been running around in circles for, for years.

But that’s normal, right? We all compare ourselves to the shining beacons of Academy Award winning actors, Grammy Award winning musicians and Booker Prize winning authors.

Those of us who love to write, sing and perform have no way of knowing whether we’re any good other than seeing our picture in Vanity Fair, Who Magazine or, one day, if we dare to dream, our face on our own action figure doll.

But maybe there is another way to feel good about our creative souls? Maybe just living true to the urgings of your inner self is enough.

I know I am happy to have acted, sung and written my way around the world (well, I worked in England a bit) and back again, and just because I’m not a household name doesn’t mean I haven’t been successful. So maybe, whatever happens with my latest expedition into the world of stand-up comedy, I will be a success just ’cause I’ve given it a go?

At least I won’t leave this planet with a final thought of, “Why didn’t I at least try?”

And maybe I’ll even get a laugh or two. Or three.

Not that I’m counting.

Though a B.G. Mitchell doll that tells dick jokes would surely be a big seller.

:)

PS. If you fancy a bit of a larf’ you might like to take a gander at my first ever joke book, The Little Booze Joke Book. Inspired by my recently finished Year of Living Sober, TLBJB has over 100 of the best Little Booze Jokes as an ebook for 99 cents! No joke.
